Costa Cruises > Sustainability Report
Our commitment to sustainable tourism is now certified

The Socio-Environmental Report testifies to our commitment to complying with ethical values, safeguarding our staff, respecting our clients and protecting the environment.
This edition constitutes an important step forward, as it has been drawn up according to the latest guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and is certified by the RINA certification body.

The GRI is the international standard in sustainability reporting. It was established in 1997 with the support of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) with the exclusive purpose of drawing up and circulating a model for reporting by defining guidelines that allow social environmental reports to be produced that are easy to compare and verify and are extremely reliable.

During the period of this report (December 2006–November 2007) we achieved important environmental results: we reduced our water consumption, cut our waste production by 10% and increased our recycled waste by 18%. In order to reduce the environmental impact of our fleet, we also promoted research aimed at reducing the fuel consumption and atmospheric emissions of our ships.

From a social point of view, we have extended our staff training activities and improved safety in many areas. We have also participated in many social and cultural ventures, promoting them and supporting them both alone and in partnership with various institutions, associations and bodies.

In economic terms, the results confirm the strengthening of our leadership in Italy and Europe. Costa Cruises reached its one millionth booking in July 2007, ending the year with a total of over 1.1 million Guests. This is an all-time record, never achieved by any European cruise line before.

The 2007 Socio-Environmental Report contains a brief assessment questionnaire. We invite everyone to complete it on line and send it to our offices as indicated. It will provide us with specific information to improve our approach to sustainability and help us to draw up the next edition of the report.
